Historic Quito.
Quito, named for the Quitus tribe who, predating the Inca, used to occupy that area, was built by the Spanish on the ruined site of what was once an Incan capital city. In 1533, an Inca General destroyed the city so that the Spanish would have no Inca treasures as spoils. The Spanish started reconstructing Quito in 1534, using some of the same stonework left behind by the Inca, as well as the other native cultures predating them.
